Body Fluid Exposure (BFE) management service

Work related exposures to blood and other body fluids can occur across a wide variety of occupations, including health care, emergency services (police, fire and rescue services) and prison services. In addition to the risk of exposure to a blood borne virus, an occupational exposure to blood/body fluids can be quite upsetting for both the employee and their family.   

Definition of exposure

Exposure is defined as contamination with blood or other body fluids via a puncture wound, bite, laceration, abrasion, splash in the eye or ingestion of such fluids.

Occupational exposures to blood and body fluids can place staff at risk of infection from blood-borne viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

Specialist advice and services

As an expert in occupational body fluid exposures (BFE), we can provide expert and evidence based support for assessment and management of BFE including the requirement of HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (HIV PEP), appropriate follow up assessments, provide bespoke BFE protocols, education, posters and leaflets for your staff. We also provide detailed collective reports of the accidents to enable your organisation to identify measures to reduce the risk of BFE and fulfil your legal duties under the health and safety legislations.

In addition to our own experienced staff, we can draw on the services of NHS specialists in our Trust e.g.  Virology/ Genitourinary medicine (GUM)/HIV services and other specialist medical advisers to support the treatment and care of affected staff.

Infection control and contact tracing

Exposure to infections such as tuberculosis (TB), measles, pertussis (whooping cough), meningitis and varicella zoster (chicken pox), whilst at work can put staff, clients and patients at risk. Minimising and managing the risk of infection outbreaks in a timely manner is a high priority for many businesses including healthcare services, universities and schools.

Our team at the Trust have experience in working closely with expert public health experts from Public Health England (PHE) to manage and reduce the spread of infection and can provide informed support for assessment and management of infection outbreaks including treatment and vaccination, contact tracing, education, posters and leaflets for your staff.

Business travel health service

We have considerable expertise and experience in the field of travel medicine and have been providing a wide range of travel health services for over 30 years. 

We can work closely with you to gain a clear understanding of your organisation’s travel requirements and the environments and conditions that your employees may be exposed to during overseas travel.

Workplace immunisations and virology services                

Occupational immunisations and virology services are an important safety measure when staff are likely to be exposed to particular diseases in the workplace. We can assist you in undertaking a risk assessment to determine your staff’s vaccination need. We have extensive experience in providing immunisation programmes for certain work-related vaccine preventable communicable diseases and delivering both small and large scale vaccination programmes including Influenza and Hepatitis B.

We work in accordance with the latest guidance from the Public Health England and Department of Health and Social Care.

All OH records are securely stored in accordance with GDPR (2018) and all individuals are provided with an immunity assessment certificate. 

All vaccinations are delivered by our trained nursing staff under Patient Group Directions (PGD) for the administration of vaccines.

The Trust OHS has the expertise to deliver onsite and offsite vaccination campaigns bespoke to the needs of your business.

Exposure Prone Procedure (EPP) clearance                       

Clearance and management of health care workers who undertake exposure prone procedures is a national requirement. Our experienced team work in accordance with the latest guidance from the Public Health England to provide clearance for EPP healthcare workers and surveillance management for those healthcare workers infected with blood borne viruses.

With our Clinical Director being a registered member of UKAP we are in a position to provide expert advice and guidance on healthcare workers infected with HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C

This confidential service is enabled by our onsite virology facilities where all testing is undertaken in-house.

Staff flu programmes                                                                    

The Trust have a long history of delivering successful staff flu vaccination campaigns and have vaccinated in hospitals, schools, health centres and at staff conferences. We can also provide a comprehensive programme of peer vaccinator training and general vaccination update training.

Rehabilitation services                                                                

The Trust occupational health services can offer multidisciplinary vocational rehabilitation services, with access to a range of healthcare specialists including physiotherapists and psychologists.

The focus of rehabilitation within the workplace is to help employees retain or regain the ability to participate in work.

The aims of the Trust OHS rehabilitation service is:

  • to provide advice and support on early intervention with clear aims of plan for return to work
  • to provide comprehensive rehabilitation programmes involving a functional assessment and a return to work plan and optional physiotherapy and psychological therapy interventions
  • to recommend adjustments and work modifications to facilitate remaining at or returning to work 
  • to have a multidisciplinary approach to case management
  • to advise on good management practice of long-term health conditions in the workplace.
